With frustrating slowness, she hobbled downstairs and out into the rose arbor where she sat, letting the warmth of the sun ease her aching body. Her mind raced from thought to thought. She didn’t know how long she had been sitting there, but she heard voices, and thinking it might be Wade returning, she reached for her crutches. She was still struggling to rise when an elderly couple came around the corner. Wade’s chauffeur, Billy, appeared from nowhere and came to stand just in front of her, but slightly to the side. He was ready for an attack, but was trying not to make it look like it.

“Hello. I think we might be trespassing, but we came to have a tour though the gallery and Ainsley House. It is such a beautiful, old colonial home and I believe it houses some of the best local artwork,” the woman said.

Kayla’s face flushed with a trace of anger and regret as she sank back down on the bench seat. “I’m sorry, the house is currently closed,” she said as politely as she could.

The gentleman glanced over his shoulder at the house. “Such a shame,” he said. “I believe it’s going to be demolished.”

Kayla nodded.

The woman adjusted her hat and handbag. “Well it should be stopped. Surely public opinion would be against the town heritage being destroyed by an outsider?” she muttered.

Kayla smiled. “I don’t think they’ve been consulted,” she replied.

The woman almost bristled. “Well, someone should ask them!” she snapped.

Kayla stood now, and leaned on her crutches. “Yes, maybe they should be asked, and I am the one that should be asking. Thank you. You’ve given me an idea. If you will excuse me, I have a phone call to make.”

Startled at her sudden dismissal, the couple stared at her for moment then turned and walked toward the gate.

Kayla cursed her injuries as she hobbled inside. It was time to call in a few favors and to test how the community really felt about Ainsley House. She rang the Port Lincoln Times office and asked to speak to Simon McDonald.

Before she could speak, Simon jumped in.

“Kayla, is everything okay?”

“No, Simon, things are not okay, and I am beginning to think they never will be again. I need a favor,” she replied.

“Anything you want, Kayla,” Simon promised.

“I need some help to stop the illegal demolition of the house. I know Phillip is behind it—Phillip and that Seville guy—and I need to stop it. I want the townspeople to protest the demolition of the town’s heritage icon,” she announced grandly.

“I’m glad you’ll set the record straight because most people here think you have sold out the town’s heritage—and your own grandmother—for money.”

“I want to place an editorial and an ad for a public demonstration to be held, if you can, for tomorrow’s edition of the paper.”

“Hmmmm. I think we can swing it because we don’t go to print until late tonight. I may be able to move a few things around to make the space.
